Custom Counter Mats: How Checkout Counters Become Selling Space

Your counter already has an audience. Give it something worth looking at.

A customer walks up to your counter. They wait, pull out their card, and glance down.

What do they see?

With custom counter mats, that everyday moment becomes an opportunity to introduce a service, highlight an offer, or give someone a reason to come back.

You already have the counter. You already have the customer. Give that space something useful to say.

What is a custom counter mat?

A custom counter mat is a printed, branded mat that sits flat on a checkout counter, reception desk, or service counter.

Unlike a flyer that gets picked up or a brochure that needs replenishing, a counter mat keeps your message where customers pay, check in, and ask questions.

That makes it a simple addition to your point-of-purchase marketing—reaching people while they’re already interacting with your business.

What could your counter be selling?

Start with something customers might appreciate knowing.

The message doesn’t have to be a discount. Sometimes “We offer catering” is enough to start a conversation—and a future order.

Think about the questions your team answers regularly, or the services customers are surprised you offer. Those are good starting points for a counter mat.

Common counter mat sizes

Standard counter mat sizes are 18 × 12 and 24 × 16 inches. Custom dimensions are also available.

SizeWhere it fits
18 × 12 inchesA practical format for reception desks and service counters, with space for a clear headline and call to action.
24 × 16 inchesA larger display area for product comparisons, service information, or a more prominent visual.
Custom sizeChoose separate width and height dimensions to fit your counter.

Measure the open space customers actually see. Payment terminals, monitors, and paperwork still need somewhere to go.

Bigger isn’t automatically better. A smaller mat with a clear message can be more useful than a large one that ends up underneath the card reader.

A practical surface for everyday business

Counter mats share space with keys, shopping bags, paperwork, and the occasional coffee cup. Material matters as much as the artwork.

Choose Econo (6 Mil) or Standard (20 Mil) PVC. Both give your artwork a flat surface for full-color printing on the front; the 20 mil option is thicker.

Finish your mat with matte or gloss lamination and choose square corners or a 1/4-inch rounded corner. Matte keeps reflections subdued; gloss gives colors more shine.

For routine cleaning, follow the finished product’s care instructions. A surface suited to wipe-downs isn’t automatically compatible with every disinfectant or cleaning chemical.

Design for a glance

A customer shouldn’t need to study your counter mat to understand it.

Give the design:

A QR code can connect your printed message to a booking page, menu, or signup form. Tell people what they’ll get when they scan, and keep the code away from countertop clutter.

Your logo identifies the business. The message gives customers a reason to act.

One message across many locations

Branded counter mats are also useful for companies working through dealers, merchants, franchisees, or partner locations.

They give participating businesses a consistent way to introduce a brand or service, right where customer conversations happen.

For longer-running campaigns, keep the printed message evergreen. “Explore our payment options” has a longer useful life than an offer with a deadline next month. A QR code linking to a webpage you control can carry details that change.

Need visibility from farther away? Pair the mat with a matching counter sign or custom table tent. The upright display catches attention as customers approach; the mat puts the details in front of them.

Put your counter to work

Good marketing doesn’t always need more space. Sometimes it needs a better use of the space you already have.

A counter mat gives an overlooked surface a purpose: answering a question, introducing a service, or turning a routine checkout into the start of another sale.

At Quixprint, we produce custom counter mats in 6 mil and 20 mil PVC for businesses and multi-location programs.
